Mental illness has no boundaries. Hundreds of millions across the world suffer every day and are forced to face these battles on their own. More specifically, about 1 in 5 adults in the United States struggle with their mental health, while nearly 35% of college students suffer from depression. These statistics don’t even include those who are left untreated and fending for themselves.
Fortunately, awareness has risen as the problem has gotten more severe over the past decade. Although treatment from 2007 to 2017 rose from 19% to 34%, there is still tremendous work to be done as students with lifetime diagnoses increased from 22% in 2007 to 36% in 2017.
Everybody knows someone who suffers through depression, anxiety or other mental health struggles, whether they are aware of it or not. Three years ago, Sigma Pi lost our brother Nic "Tex" Smith to suicide. In his honor, in solidarity with his friends and family and with recognition and respect to all those who fought the same battles, we are pleased to continue raising awareness for mental health and fundraising for our most at-risk community members.
Even as awareness levels rise, there has never been a more critical time to act on it than now. COVID-19 is a stressful time for many and we hope to ease as much stress and make as many positive changes as possible. For those who are able, we kindly request you consider donating to this specific cause, or even just sharing our mission with your family and friends. If we save just one life, all of our hard work will have been worth it! All proceeds will be donated to IU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Sexual Assault Crisis Services (SACS), and the Student Advocate Fund to help families affected by COVID-19. Thank you and God bless.
